Vendors decry the water crisis

Bulawayo vendors are complaining of the water crisis, especially those who reside at Magwegwe area (ward18), who have spent more than a month without water. “A lot of time is spent looking for the precious liquid in boreholes and in queues waiting for the bowser, instead of engaging in business activities” vendors told Vendors Voice. Hygienic standards are seriously impacted, since hand washing is a top recommendation and risk of exposure is heightened to vendors at boreholes, public taps and mobile Bowser trucks that are not sufficiently sanitised, said BVTA president Aleck Ndlovu. The absence of water has also increased burden on women as they walk long distances to access water. This had deprived them of the ability to fend and take care of their families. “The shortage of water has disrupted us from doing many household chores, we have lost social lives and incurred losses in our businesses as we spend most of the time looking for water or queuing at boreholes,” said Phakamile Moyo who resides at Magwegwe. “We hope the Council will come up with more portable sources to combat this water crisis amid the COVID-19 pandemic,” Moyo said.
