Informal traders have been equipped with skills on value addition by Sizimele under the Urban Resilience Safe Markets project, following post harvest losses and poor waste management that have been observed in the sector and food markets.
Informal traders operating in food and vegetable markets are facing challenges in terms of customer base, transporting products, storage capacity and improper packaging, often resulting in loss of wares especially the perishables.
“Today we were trained on how to make juice, seedlings, tomato sauce and dried soup from tomatoes, I have been buying tomato sauce, from today I will manufacture it from my home,” Carol Nkomo told The Vendors Voice.
“I have been struggling with disposing waste, now that I have attained these skills, my problem has been solved, said Jifile Dube, an informal trader who sells fruits and vegetables.
The skills will assist them in attaining diversified incomes said Makhosi Mahlangu, the facilitator.
